My son left his bike ( an orange GO-Sport French bike) at the Bethesda metro station yesterday January 12 09 at 9:30 am. He attached it with a traditional lock (a sturdy cable one) to the bike rack that stands at the station entry. When he came back at 6:00 pm, the bike was stolen. So beware to put a really strong lock in you intend to bike and ride the metro, especially on Inauguration Day next week. Also, you may want to know that in some places ( notably Bethesda-Chevy Chase for sure) you can register your bike at you local police station. You can then notify the police , if it is stolen. And who knows.... the police may find it afterwards, a few miles further down, abandoned in a parking lot, it would be your lucky day.
ReplyDeleteCapital Crescent Trail Jan 27.
ReplyDeleteleft the bank at 5:30, fairly easy until Fletchers p rpbbly had been salted earlier. After that the snow was was about 2-3 inches, and the going was harder.
However the wintry mix tonight is going to overlay hte snow, and will make the trail very slippery in the morning. I intend to take the bus in.
By the way the ride this morning was gorgeous -- light snow on the trail, and almost nobody on it.

ReplyDeleteI rode in this morning on the CCT from River Road down to Georgetown.
From River Road to the railway tunnel, there was a fair amount of snow built up on the trail, and it was difficult to ride. I actually rode a road bike style single speed, which was my mistake - a mountain bike with wider tires would probably have been ok, but with skinny tires, it was really difficult. It was hard to go more than a few feet at a time, it was hard to get a rhythm going, and at some point I despaired of ever making it to work - I would just be forever trying to make it a few more feet on the CCT.
The downhill section after the railway bridge was a little easier - there was a lot less snow and it was easier to pedal through.
The flat part of the trail that runs beside the canal had very little snow. It was a bit icy, but it didn't seem too slippery, and it was easy to get up some speed. If it melts/refreezes it could get treacherous, though.
All in all it took me about an hour to go from River Road to Georgetown.

ReplyDeleteI rode the CCT from Georgetown to River Road starting around 6pm.
The flat part of the trail alternated between bare patches and some ice, but not too slippery and it was easy to do a decent speed.
The uphill portion had more snow/slush but was fairly easy to pedal through.
The upper part, from railway tunnel to River Rd, still had a lot of snow and was more difficult to pedal through. It was easier than in the morning, but it was still slow and difficult to pedal.
There's enough on the trail that if it freezes and it cold in the morning, it could be really difficult. I'm contemplating going through the city.
Total time from Georgetown to River was close to an hour.
If only we could get the trail plowed...http://www.m-bike.org/blog/2008/12/19/snow-plowing-copenhagen-style
Good stuff, Maryland. Keep it up!

ReplyDeleteThe trail is in a bad shape, I would not recommend using it
I came down on it, but in hindsight I should have stayed on the roads (McArthur).
Down to Fletchers it has 2'' of frozen ruts, you keeps skidding from one to the other.
From Fletchers, where it has been plowed some time ago, it is half an inch of mainly sheet ice, with many spots impossible to walk on. (I wiped out once, but had several moments of 'uncliped feet ready for landing')
There is some chance the park service will sand the section Georgetown to Fletchers, but the rest is likely to stay bad for several days.
I am taking McArthur on my way home.

Feb 2, Capital Crescent Trail:
ReplyDeleteThe trail is mostly dry blacktop from Dalecarlia tunnel down to Georgetown, safe to ride.
On the north side of the tunnel however is a large patch of frozen slush and a section of smooth ice. Also, futher above are patches of frozen snow that are tricky to ride. Most can be walked over.
The steep path from McArthur/Sangamore light to the trail is icey and slippery, I recommend walking the bike on the side of the trail.

Trail same condition today - patch of ice at tunnel mouth and slush through the Little Falls section of the trail. Still, perfect day for shorts..
